These small paintings are referred to as "apunti", meaning small notes in Italian. I chose not to call them Sketches seeing that they are more than that. They are not heavy in detail and are created more to capture the essence and feel for that particular time and moment. They are sometimes preliminary ideas or studies for bigger canvas' as well as section cuts of paintings and ideas that are being worked through and considered for future pieces. Essentially a beginning phase of the painting process and yet a painting in themselves.

Trout Creek Studios Hand-Crafted Picture Frames

Our picture frames are hand-made to achieve heirloom quality craftsmanship. The frames are of solid wood construction and use glued-in key splines to reinforce the mitered corners. The wood is sanded velvety smooth and finished with a wipe-on varnish so the warm feel of the wood is retained.
Our frames are made with durable regional hardwoods, not basswood like most commercially available frames. Our double-constructed frames are typically made with a figured interior wood such as sugar, curly or birds-eye maple and an exterior surround of a complementary wood such as walnut or cherry. We also use figured woods such as quarter-sawn or curly oak. Our key splines can be matching or contrasting wood.
